The Editing Phase…

Congratulations on completing your story/work! As a writer myself, I understand how frustrating the editing phase can get. That’s why I am here, to offer you a fresh set of eyes on the words you have been working so hard on. Below you will find the different types of services I offer. If in doubt, please feel free to contact me about recommendations on which service best fits your needs.

Developmental Editing…

What you get:

Manuscript Critique & Marginal Feedback

This is where we get into the bulk of your story. You will receive a Manuscript Critique (average 7 to 10-page letter), along with marginal feedback. I will discuss the readability of your book when referring to the following craft elements:

  • Hook/Opening
  • Character Development
  • Themes and Subtext
  • Plot and Subplot
  • Pacing and Momentum
  • Tone, Voice, and Word Choice
  • Structure and Form
  • Exposition
  • Scene
  • Setting and World-building
  • Reader Expectation/Marketability

I will also answer questions such as:

Would I recommend this book?
Which characters did I connect with, and why?
Did I find the storyline believable (even if this is Sci-Fi or Fantasy)?
Was the tense and POV the best choice for the story and the writing style?
Was there any part of the writing that I skimmed? Why?
Were all issues (especially subplots/secondary storylines) resolved?

And of course, before I start a project, I welcome and recommend that you let me know of anything specific that you would like me to focus on. I will make sure to address those concerns first.

2 Passes – I will read it once while taking notes. The second time around, I will add marginal feedback.

Timeline:

2 – 4 weeks once on the schedule

Beta Reading…

What you get:

Manuscript Critique

Similar to the Developmental Edit, in that you will receive a Manuscript Critique letter from me discussing your strengths and weaknesses. The letter, usually only 1 to 2 pages (sometimes more), will cover the following craft elements:

  • Hook/Opening
  • Character Development
  • Plot and Subplot
  • Pacing and Momentum
  • Scene
  • Setting and World-building
  • Reader Expectation/Marketability

In addition to those craft elements, you may ask me a set of questions that you would like me to focus on.

2 Passes

Timeline:

1 – 2 weeks depending on length of project, and once on the schedule
